Dear Families,

Welcome to the 2021 - 2022 school year at Cottonwood Elementary!  We are so excited and honored to have the opportunity to partner with you to make this a fantastic school year for our students!

While we are once again starting our school year under unique circumstances, we are very excited to have students return to the building for full time in person instruction. I understand there are a wide range of opinions represented within our community about the format of school and the precautions that should or should not be taken to keep our students safe and engaged during the pandemic. My role as principal is to focus on our students, their learning, and to support parents, teachers, and staff with the important work of educating our students each school day.  I trust our school board and district leaders to put students first as they engage with the community and health department to provide appropriate guidance for our schools. My role is to follow the guidance, and to strive to keep our collective focus on what we all value most, our students and their learning.

Now for some information for you:

  • School Supplies: We are asking for a $20 donation for school supplies instead of publishing long lists of expensive supplies. Buying in bulk saves parents A LOT of money and we are able to purchase what the students need. The only additional items all students will need that are not included in the supply donation are the following:
    • Backpack
    • Masks
    • Water bottle
    • Headphones

If you are not able to supply these items for your children, please notify the school so we can ensure your student has what is needed. The $20.00 donations can be paid by check to the school, exact cash to the office or online through the school website anytime during the month of September.

  • School Bell Schedule:
    • M/T/W/F  9:10 am - 3:25 pm  (Breakfast begins at 8:45 and is served until 9:05 am)
    • Thursday 9:10 am - 1:55 pm  (Early Release Day)
    • Breakfast begins at 8:45 and is served until 9:05 am
    • Teachers open their doors at 9:00
  • COVID Impact On Schools: We plan to open schools full time for all students and for the most part, school will function similarly to a typical year. There is a very lengthy COVID guidance document that is found here but a brief summary is provided below:
    • At this time, you may come to the office but an appointment will be necessary to enter the rest of the building.
    • On the first day of school and thereafter, students will be entering through the outside doors. Parents who choose to walk their children to class will need to say goodbye at the door.
    • We will continue our efforts to keep kids safe by cleaning the building and having kids wash hands as often as possible.
    • Masks will be worn by staff and students when inside school.
    • We will have PE, Music and Library classes. We will be allowed to move throughout the building between spaces more freely.
    • We will do everything we can to social distance 3ft throughout the day. Details regarding recess and lunch procedures will be communicated prior to September 1.
    • Volunteers: We will begin allowing parents into the building to volunteer for a specific purpose after the first few weeks of school. Volunteers will need to have their volunteer paperwork approved and arrangements made in advance with staff.
  • Childcare: We have on site before and after school childcare provided through the YMCA.  Information can be found at https://www.ymcapkc.org/child-care

Please stay tuned for additional information.  We are happy to be back and looking forward to reconnecting and serving our community of learners.  We can be reached at 360-662-8300 if you have questions.

Sincerely,

Ninette Rivero

Principal
